Obinna Ikeh, a software engineer at EnAccess, led a discussion with developers, implementers, and community members on MPM’s evolution and strategic direction, including the upcoming stable release and the long-term roadmap for off-grid communities.

A Unified Vision for MPM

Initially developed as a proprietary mini-grid management tool, MPM has grown into a robust, community-driven Open Source project. Its ongoing development demonstrates a commitment to flexible, reliable energy management for off-grid communities worldwide.

The central goal for 2026 is to unify legacy versions into a single, cohesive platform that supports diverse off-grid use cases. This includes:

• Solar Home Systems (SHS)
• Mini-grids of varying sizes
• Renewable energy systems

By consolidating these systems into a single architecture, MPM aims to simplify deployment, reduce operational complexity, and ensure long-term maintainability.

• Core Reliability: Simplification and refactoring of complex abstractions to ensure efficient management of transactions, customer accounts, and system events.
• Payment Stability: Enhancement of the plugin architecture to reliably support integration with multiple external payment providers.
• SMS Integration: Completion of integration with the Open Source TextBee gateway to enable automated notifications for customer transactions and system updates.
• Improved Automated Testing: Improved testing pipeline to ensure greater stability with feature changes. 

The official MPM Get Started guide offers clear, step-by-step instructions for installing, configuring, and testing the system in development or production environments. New contributors and implementers can quickly engage with the platform using these resources.

• Inventory Management: Planned tools for tracking hardware deployment, replacements, and maintenance schedules.
• Postpaid Metering: Expanding MPM beyond prepaid models to support billing customers based on actual monthly consumption.
• Advanced Analytics: A planned Operator Dashboard (2027 and beyond) will provide real-time insights across multiple sites and tenants, helping organisations optimise operations and decision-making.

These features align with MPM’s mission to empower energy service providers with scalable, adaptable, and data-driven tools.

For instance, in Kenya, direct M-Pesa integration enables USSD-based transactions, which are critical for rural users with limited or unreliable internet connectivity. This approach ensures:

• Greater adoption among underserved communities
• Operational resilience, even when web-based gateways fail

Daniel Mohns emphasised that combining aggregator and direct integrations is essential for effectively addressing diverse regional requirements.
